The vessel simulator has made its appearance in inland waterway transport. An increasing number of teaching and training establishments are now using simulators to familiarise trainees with the techniques of handling a vessel and the specific instruments used on board inland waterway transport vessels. In order both to draw up an inventory of the use currently being made of simulators in inland waterway transport and also to be able to explore the potential of these tools for the purposes of teaching, practice and examination, an international workshop is to be held, to which experts from the relevant administrations, teaching establishments and the inland waterway transport profession are to be invited.

The programme is to cover the following aspects:

  The use already being made of simulators in inland waterway transport:

type, use and application;

capacity and geographical coverage; type of operator;

  Scientific foundation:

potential and validation of simulators for teaching purposes;

is the simulator capable of replacing (some) practical experience?

  objectives of the use of the simulation technique:

experience and practice in neighbouring sectors;

from the users' point of view;

the economic reality - investments and operating costs in relation to shortened training and practice runs; better performance on the part of the personnel trained in this way;

Medium-term prospects for simulation in inland waterway transport for teaching, training, practice and examinations:

fields of application, type and configuration of simulation programmes;

economic feasibility and density for locating centres.
